في هذا الكتاب بحثٌ علميٌّ يتناول تحرير مفهوم البدعة المحمودة (الحسَنة)، بعرض استدلالات المانعين من القرآن والحديث وآثار السلف من الصحابة والتابعين، فاستدلالات المجيزين من المصادر المذكورة، ثم الموازنة بين أدلة الفريقين، مؤيِّداً بالبحث والمناقشة المفهومَ الصحيحَ الذي هو قول المجيزين، ممثلاً عليه بواقع فتاوى الأئمة الكبار، خاصةً المجتهدين المتقدِّمين، مع نخبةٍ من أقوال أئمة الإسلام في تأييد ذلك. ويتناول بالبيان مسائل قال ببدعيتها المخالفون وهي ليست كذلك، ومسائل أخرى هي من البِدَع فعلاً والمخالفون واقعون فيها، ويختم بنتائج البحث.
ويبيّن الكتاب خطر رمي المسلم بالكفر أو الفسوق أو الابتداع، ويشرح أنّ المستحدثات عند جمهور أهل العلم منها المحمود ومنها المذموم. ولهذا المنهج الشرعيّ الأصيل أثره الحسن في جمع الكلمة والاتساع للآخر واستثمار الخلاف في الاتجاه الإيجابي.
أمّا المؤلف فباحثٌ من علماء الحديث، قويّ العارضة، عفّ القلم، يتميّز أسلوبه بالوضوح والإقناع.
