تضمّ صفحات هذا الكتاب بعض ذكريات الكاتب، منذ طفولته المبكرة، في ثلاثينيات القرن الماضي، ووعيه وإدراكه لما رآه واستوعبه، لغاية كهولته وتجاوزه الثمانين.
وتتناول أيضاً المراحل من بداية حياته، في مجتمع مُغلق يلفّه الجهل والتخلف، وبين أسرة بسيطة لا شأن لها بالعلم أو المعرفة سوى إنجاب الذرية، في زمن كان العلم فيه ترف واختيار. وإلى جانب ما اكتسبه من معرفة، وبفضل من ربّه، وذكائه الفطري وفضوله واطّلاعه، استطاع استيعاب كل مقروء وتخزينه.
في نشأته ومراهقته ونزوله للعمل في وقت مبكّر، اكتشف مدينته بيروت وتعلّق بها وأحبها، كما واكبها من ماضيها البسيط الهادئ وناسها الخلوقين والكسالى، لغاية مجيء أجيال جديدة طموحة مثقفة، غيّرت نمط الحياة والعادات فيها.
وكذلك يروي عن بيروت وأهلها وأحيائها وشوارعها وكل زاوية فيها، بالإضافة، عن حياته الخاصة وأسرته وعمله وما مرّ عليه خلال السنين، وما مرّ على البلد من مصائب، وحروب وضغائن، وعداوات وكراهية بين أهله، ولا تزال.
كان لراوي الذكريات، حظّ الخروج من مدينته بيروت، إلى بلاد أخرى والتمتع بمشاهدة مجتمعات مختلفة، بعضها ينعم بالرقيّ والتقدم، وأنظمة محترمة وقوانين تُطبق. كما وكان في حلم دائم أن يرى في مدينته ما يراه في الخارج، ولكن، يظهر أن حلمه لم ولن يتحقق، وهو على يقين، أن وطنه سيبقى كما هو وليس للأفضل، طالما اللبنانيون كرّسوا الواقع واعتادوا عليه، وليس لديهم حالياً، مشروعاً بديلاً لدولة قوية أو نظام حضاري، ولا أمل بوجودهما الآن أو في الأمد المنظور.
