في كل فرصة بين درسين كنا نرقب سماح المعلم لنا باللعب بالكرة الجديدة وأنا أزداد حرجاً في الأسئلة عنها كما لو أني كذبت وأن الأستاذ لم يأت بكرة ولم ينفخها أمامي، وكأني رأيتها في الحلم لا بين يدي الأستاذ وهو يشتمها. ونرقب أيضاً خيول الشرطة التي نزلت عن القبر واستقرت عند سفح التل ترعى لأن رقابها لم تعد شامخة وإنها محنيّة بين أرجلها ولم نعد نسمع صهيلها الذي كنا نحسه قريباً كما لو كان يأتي من خلف جدران المدرسة مباشرة. وكان عليّ قد أشعل غيرتنا عندما قال كابن هجان:" الخيلتصهل لمّا تجوع لمّا ترغب بركوب بعضها. فكذّبناه على الفور مع صوت الجرس الذي يدّقه دوماً إسماعيل ابن الأرملة."
لن تزول أبداً صورته وهو يمضغ التتن أو الشاي في إسبالة غير مكتملة للجفنين كأن لذة مص السائل من تحت اللسان لا تكتمل إلا مترافقة مع الإغماضة الناقصة... تصايحنا كأننا في لحظة واحدة شهدنا المشهد. رأينا التل يمور في السراب, مرة يظهر مقطوعاً. ومرة يظهر كاملاً. ومرة أخرى يزول وكأن السراب ابتلعه. وعلى انحنائة الجنوبي يصعد الناس كالنمل غارقين في أنهار السراب أحياناً, ومتناثرين أحياناً أخرى. ورأس التل حيث يقف بضع أشخاص يبدو وكأنه تبة مفصولة عن ما سواها برهج السراب... جميعاً... وفي لحظة واحدة صاحت ألسنتنا المبهوتة كأن الواحد منا يهمس لنفسه: أحد مات..
