مثل سيف ولد في غمده، سيف، سرعان ما شرعت زرقة البحر في صقله، لتحيله إلى موضع الندى. هي تلك علاقة قاسم حداد بمدينة المحرق التي ولد وعاش فيها أجمل سنوات تكوينه. فهي بالنسبة له كما ثقة السيف في بيته، وشعوره بالاطمئنان في عزلته، واستعداده للمجابهات الجميلة والجديرة، هي تلك علاقة صاحب السيرة بمدينة المحرق وتلك هي الصورة التي أحبها، مدينة واحدة اختزلت المدن، واختزلت المعارف، ففيها تعلم درس الحياة.
ويقول قاسم حداد بأن تأمل تجربته الذاتية في ضوء التجربة الأغنى لمدينة المحرق، هو سياق يضعه في محب كان قد تولع به وأنجز له نصوصاً متفاوتة الشكل والسياق، الأمر الذي منحه حرية الزعم بأنه وفي سردياته في هذا الكتاب هو لا يكتب في السيرة هذه سيرة الشخص، أي سيرته الذاتية، بقدر ما يحاول كتابة النص الذي يضع فيه أبجدية الناس في قاموس الشخص العتيق، ناسياً فهرس الهجاء والمديح، متحدثاً من خلال النص عن هذه المدينة من مستويات وزوايا مختلفة، والأحب لديه الحديث عنها، عن المحرق، متقاطعة بالرؤية الإنسانية التي أنشأته، متصاعدة في تجربةٍ كان لها الدور الأكبر في صياغة قاسم حداد ثقافياً وإنسانياً وإبداعياً، ومثلت في وجدانه الأبواب المفتوحة وورشة أمل حيث رأي فيها مشروعاً لا يكتمل إلا إذا اتصل بحيوية الأمل الإنساني. وهي إلى ذلك كله لا تزال قادرة على دفع الروح في ذاكرته كما يسرد شيئاً يتقاطع مع الخيال متجاوزاً الواقع في عوالم مدينته المحرق.
