عرفت النجف بأنها إحدى أكبر المدن الإسلامية التي اعتنى أهلها بالعلم والمعرفة والأدب وازدهرت فيها المدارس الدينية التي تخرج المئات من العلماء والفقهاء كما حضنت هذه المدينة عدداً كبيراً من الشعراء المتقدمين والمتأخرين الذين حلقوا في أجواء الشعر، وخلفوا دواوين لها قيمتها وأثرها.
وقد طرق مؤلف هذا الكتاب موضوعاً لم يعطه الباحثون حقه من قبل وهو مجالس الشعر في النجف والتي كان لها دور فاعل في بعث الحيوية والنشاط في صفوف الشعراء والأدباء والمفكرين، إذ حوت الكثير من المناظرات والمساجلات التي لا يوجد لها نظير. ولعل هذه المجالس تستمد أهميتها من المدينة ذاتها حيث تشجع سكانها بحب العلم والأدب.
وقد ركز الباحث على السمات الفنية التي يزخر بها الشعر النجفي، وهي الشمولية إذ طرق الشعراء النجفيون كل الأبواب وخاضوا في كل الميادين كما تميز شعرهم بقوة السك ودقة التعبير وهو يتميز عموماً ببساطته وسهولته مع أنه لم ينفصل عن الشعر العربي القديم شكلاً وإيقاعاً لكنه تميز بجدته من حيث المضمون والمعاني والمفردات، وبشكل عام فإن هذه المجالس شكلت عاملاً فاعلاً ومؤثراً في ازدهار الحركة الثقافية والفكرية في النجف الأشرف.
