موضوع الكتاب هو النقد الأدبي، من وجهة نظر تمثل، في مبادئها ونتائجها الاتجاه الطالب على النقد العالمي في العالم الغربي المتأثر بفلسفة سارتر الوجودية على أن المترجم نبّه في تعليقاته على ما يتصل من هذه المبادئ النقدية بمبادئ الوجوديين الفلسفية العامة. وهذا الكاب، وإن دل على شيء فهو يدل أصالة مؤفه وسعة اطلاعه، وعمق نظراته،وقوته الجدلية، بوصفه كاتباً ناقداً، أكثر مما يدل علىنزعة سارتر الفلسفية الوجودية، كما صنفه البعض. وهو ما كتبه المؤلف بعنوان: "ما الأدب؟" وهو يشمل الجزء الأكبر من المجلد الثاني من كتاب سارتر الذي عنوانه "مواقف" والذي ظهر في مجلدات ثلاثة. وهذا الجزء المترجم هو مقدمة قصيرة وأربعة فصول. وقد رأى المترجم أن يقدم لكل فصل بذكر نقاطه العامة، ليعين القارئ على تبع أفكار المؤلف في جملتها، وضع هذه النقاط في صدر كل فصل بحروف تخالف حروف ترجمة النص.
بالإضافة إلى ذلك، حرص المترجم، على شرح، وبإيجاز، أفكار المؤلف الفلسفية والأدبية، وإشاراته التاريخية، والقيام بتعليق على ما ذكره من القصص أو الكتب ولمؤلفين والشخصيات الأدبية، بما يساعد القارئ على فهم ما يريده المؤلف منها. وقد ذكر المترجم شروحه في هوامش الصفحات، وذلك تسهيلاً للقارئ في سبيل قراءة معمقة لما وراء السطور في هذا الكتاب.
