يُعتبر هذا الكتاب إذا صح أنَّ مؤلفه تمكن من إكماله وفق الخُطَّة التي رسمها في مقدمته - من أوْسع الكتب التي ألَّفَت عن الشعر العربي من حيث الإختيار والجمع وذكر تراجم مشاهير الشعراء، مع أخبار القبائل وأنسابها، فقد جاء في أوله: (وينبغي لك يا قارئ الكتاب إن كنت تُحب الشعر أن تَعْتَدَّهُ مختار أشعار القبائل، فإنَّ كُنْتَ تحب الأخبار تمثله مُؤلفاً في سير الجاهلية والإسلام، ومقصوداً بالأغرب فالأغرب من المعارف والآثار، وإن كنت تحب اللغة تصوره كتاباً مُرْتبطاً لكثير من عقائلها ومن الشواهد عليها، وإن كنت تُحِبُّ النَّسَبَ - وهو أصعب علوم العرب - احتسبته سياقَةَ جماهير الأنساب، وذكراً لجمل من معارف الأشراف، وأيقنت أنك لو أردت أن تُصَنَّفَ منه مِئِيْن من الكتب لأمكنك، لأنك تأتي إلى أخبار إياس بن مُعاوية - مثلاً - فتجد في بابه من أخباره عند ذكر مُزَيْنَةَ ما لو أفردته مؤلفاً لما كان معيباً)، فهو على هذا يشبه كتاب "أنساب الأشراف" للبلاذريّ من بعض الوجوه، ويمتاز عليه بكونه جعل الشعر أساساً يقوم عليه الكتاب.
