في المؤلفين من لم تعرفهم إلا بصفحات قليلة أبقت عليها الأيام من ألوف كتبوها، ومنه علي بن ربّن-والربّن والربين والراب أسماء لمقدمي شريعة اليهود، وممن ربن المعلم العظيم، وربن اسم أبي علي كان رَبَّنْ اليهود. ألف ابن ربن كثيراً في الطب والصحة، كما ألف في الأدب، وعرف بكتابه الذي نقلب صفحاته "الدين والدولة" أتت فيه النبوة إثبات العارف بالأديان الأخرى ولا سيما اليهودية والنصرانية وقيل أن الخليفة المتوكل عاونه في تأليفه.
وبعد كتابه هذا دليلاً ناصعاً على اضطلاعه بالحكمة، وأنه انتحل الإسلام عن بصيرة بعد أن نضج في العلوم وأحفى المشاكل بحثاً. وقد جود الكلام في الدين والدولة على الصحابة، وعرض لجميل سيرتهم وعفتهم من الحال والرغبة عن الرفاهية، كما جود في فضل ما أوتي به الرسول. ومن أجمل ما في الكتاب نقول عن الكتاب المقدس والنبوات عليها مسحة من البلاغة أكثر من الترجمات المشهورة، ولعلها منقولة من الترجمات الضائعة من التوراة والأناجيل أو أنها كانت من ترجمه هو حيث كان يعرف لغات أخرى مع العربية.
