يحظى هذا الكتاب "الشطرنج للمبتدئين" بقبول واسع في أوساط محترفي وهواة هذه الرياضة الذهنية. وقد تمّ تطبق ما جاء فيه بيسر ونجاح تام في تدريبات فريق الشطرنج العراقي النسوي إلى الدورة الرياضية العربية التاسعة، التي جرت في عمان في آب 1999، وأحرز فيها العراق المركز الأول لفريق النساء. لقد أثبت أن المنهج الذي يتحدث عنه المؤلف في كتابه هذا ملائماً لتدريب الناشئة الذين هم ما بين عمر 9 سنوات إلى 12 سنة تقريباً، ويرقى أن يكون المنهج التدريبي للعبة الشطرنج في هذا الكتاب أن يكون برنامجاً للمبتدئين الذين لا يعرفون سوى كيف تتحرك القطع.
ويقول المترجم بأن البرنامج المدرج في هذا الكتاب هو موجه بالدرجة الأولى إلى المدربين في نسخته الإنكليزية، إذ لم يكن يحوي إلا النزر اليسير من أشكال الأوضاع الشطرنجية، حيث قدم أغلبها بأسلوب التسجيل كتابة، لذا عمد المترجم بإبدالها أشكالاً مرسومة تيسيراً لاطلاع اللاعبين والهواة ومن يفضل متابعة لعبة الشطرنج دون استخدام رقعة وقطعاً، كما قام المترجم بإجراء بعض التغييرات الطفيفة في أسلوب الكتاب ليتلاءم مع اللاعبين الذين يعتمدون في تدريباتهم على أنفسهم دون معلم، وذلك بإخراج حلول الواجبات البيتية من متن الكتاب، إلى قسم خاص في نهايته، وذلك منعاً لإفساد الفائدة بمعرفة الحلول دون المحاولة في إيجادها. وتجدر الإشارة إلى أن هذا الكتاب الكفء يسد حاجة المكتبة العربية إلى مثل هذه الكتب التدريبية، كما أنه يساهم في رفع مستوى الشطرنج العربي بصورة عامة.
