مثلت الشمس بالنسبة للقدماء شيء هائل وكلّي الوجود وغير قابل للتجزئة وأبدي غير قابل للفناء، البشرية جمعاء شعرت بحاجتها الدائمة إلى نور الشمس وطاقتها الخلاقة وما من شيء أكثر رعباً بالنسبة لهم من فكرةغيابها عن الوجود، تأثيراتها الخيّرة جعلتها تمثّل مبدأ الخير بالنسبة للقدماء.
تتفق أديان العالم القديم على أن الشمس المادية المرئية في السماء هي مجرّد إنعكاس للقوة الإلهية التجاوزية وليست المصدر الرئيسي لها، بعد التدقيق في مخطوطات القدماء وتفحّص فنونهم وأفكارهم نجد أنهم كانوا يتحدثون عن شمس من نوع آخر غير تلك التي نألفها في السماء، هي ذات طبيعة باطنية مسؤولة عن حاجات القسم الإلهي التجاوزي للطبيعة والمخلوقات والكون عموماً.
هذا يجعل الشمس تمثل بالنسبة للقدماء مبدأ وليس شيء محدد، هي النار الداخلية في كافة الأجسام، هي مسيّر الحياة ومحفّزها، هي سبب كل التوالد والتجدد، من دونها لا يوجد حركة ولا وجود ولا هيئة أو شكل، هي رمز الحكمة، هي مركز القوة في قلب الأشياء.
الشمس الباطنية هي مركز الطاقة ومخزن كل النشاطات، كل كائن حيّ يحوي بداخله هذا المصدر الرئيسي للحياة، هي تلك الشمس الباطنية القابعة في القسم الخفي من كينونة الإنسان وتشعّ عبر ظلام جسده المادي، لا يستطيع الإنسان العادي رؤية هذه الشمس إلا إذا كان متنوراً.
تعتبر عبادة الشمس إحدى أقدم أشكال الممارسة الدينية في التاريخ، لكن تبين أن الشمس الأرضية التي عبدها القدماء ظاهرياً هي مجرّد صورة أو رمز للشمس الباطنية التي تمثل الهدف الحقيقي لعبادتهم، ما هي هذه الشمس الباطنية التي مثلت محور عبادة كافة الأديان في العالم القديم؟... هذا ما سنتعرف عليه في الكتاب.
