هذا كتاب من أجود تصانيف إمام اللغة والأدب العلامة أبي بكر بن دريد الأزدي مشتمل على فنون شتى من الأخبار الموثقة والألفاظ المونقة، والأشعار الرائعة، والمعاني المحببة، والحكم المتناهية، والأحاديث المنجية، أتى فيه بأحاديث النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم التي فاقت أدباً وبلاغة، واشتهرت بجوامع الكلم، متى ضربت الأمثال بتلك الكلمات إنما هي في الظاهر كلمة، أو كلمتان خفيفتان، وفي الباطن عينان نضاختان.
وتلمع هذه الكلمات كالنجوم في السماوات فشرحها المصنف، وأظهر ما كان مكنوناً فيها من المعاني والمطالب، وبين نكاتها الأدبية ثم أتى بشعر أحدها، من كلام الشعراء والبلغاء ثم ذكر ما حفظ من كلام أبي بكر الصديق رضي الله عنه وعمر بن الخطاب رضي الله عنه، وعمر بن الخطاب رضي الله عنه، وعثمان بن عفان رضي الله عنه، وعلي بن أبي طالب كرم الله وجهه، وغيرهم من الصحابة ثم بعد هذا نقل ما حفظ من أقوال الحكماء وكلام الشعراء وأقاويل الأدباء.
