تعيد هذه الرواية رسم معالم الشخصية الألمانية ومنجزها الثقافي والفكري في العقود الستة الأخيرة عبر تحليل شخصية رودولف، الكاتب الذي ساعدت إقامته في الخارج (إيطاليا، في مدينة تورين) على تحديد معالم بيئته الأولى (ألمانيا).
رواية هي خلاصة تجارب المشهد الثقافي الألماني الذي يحضر بهواجسه ومحاولاته للإضافة والتجديد، كما لم يفت الكاتب أن يحول تجارب الفاشلين من زملائه إلى رؤية جديدة في دور الكتابة ومؤداها.
يتداخل ميشائيل كورغر، الشاعر الروائي الأماني، مع الراوي في النص حتى ليصعب وضع حدود فاصلة بينهما ليجتمعا معاً في الشخصية الرئيسة التي يرويان على لسانها أجرأ الأحكام والرؤى التي لا يجرؤ كاتب على طرحها باسمه الصريح ولا تمتلك قيمتها إن قيلت باسم مستعار.
إنه تقرير مدير التركة الذي يحصي تركات الخبرة الإنسانية المتراكمة عبر ملفات صديقه المتوفي الذي لا يتورع عن التصريح بأن موتع موت للأدب: "أهدي لك تحياتي من سرير موت الأدب".
