ثمة قاعدتان أساسيتان يحسن الإشارة إليهما في منهج تحليل الخطاب، وذلك لأهميتهما في تحديد طبيعة "الإجراءات" التحليلية المستخدمة في هذا الكتاب؛ القاعدة الأولى: أن الخطابات المنتجة في سياق ثقافي حضاري تاريخي ليست خطابات "مغلقة"، أو مستقلة عن بعضها.
إن آليات "الإستبعاد" و"الإقصاء" التي يمارسها خطاب ما ضد خطاب آخر تعني "حضور" هذا الخطاب الآخر، بدرجات بنيوية متفاوتة، في بنية الخطاب الأول.
هذا مع إفتراض غيابه التام العمومي على مستوى "المنطوق" و"المفهوم"، لأن هذا الغياب ليس إلا عملية "تغييب" لتحقيق "الإقصاء".
فإذا أضفنا إلى ذلك أن تلك الخطابات تشترك إلى حد كبير في طبيعة "الإشكاليات" التي تحدد منطوقها ومفهومها وبنيتها، أدركنا أن الحديث عن خطاب مستقل ليس إلا نوعاً من التبسيط الذي يفضى إلى تزييف الخطاب موضوع الدراسة.
القاعدة الثانية أن كل الخطابات تتساوى من حيث هي خطابات؛ وليس من حق واحد منها أن يزعم إمتلاكه الحقيقة، لأنه حين يفعل ذلك يحكم على نفسه بأنه خطاب "زائف".
قد يتمتع خطاب ما، في سياق سياسي إجتماعي تاريخي بعينه، بالذيوع والإنتشار اللذين يؤديان إلى سيطرته وهيمنته على الخطابات الأخرى، فيقوم بتهميشها وإلقائها خارج دائرة الضوء وبؤرة الإهتمام، لكن تاريخ الثقافة في كل المجتمعات الإنسانية يعلمنا أن هذه السيطرة والهيمنة لخطاب بعينه كانت تتم من خلال عوامل القهر السياسي والإذعان الإجتماعي وتزييف الوعي في أحسن الأحوال.
لذلك يبرأ منهج الخطاب هنا (قدر الإمكان) من الإستسلام لأوهام اليافطات المستقرة (تراثياً وإعلامياً) لوصف بعض الخطابات وصفاً يستهدف وضعها في قلب "الدين" ذاته.
هذا بالإضافة إلى أن "الدين" ذاته ليس إلا مجموعة من النصوص التي تتجدد دلالتها، بدورها، بالسياق، وذلك بوصفها "خطاباً"؛ وكون الخطاب إلهياً (من حيث المصدر) لا يعني عدم قابليته للتحليل بما هو خطاب إلهي تجسّد في اللغة الإنسانية بكل إشكاليات سياقها الإجتماعي والثقافي والتاريخي.
