هذا الكتاب ليس دفاعاً تقليديّاً عن "الإيمان" و"الدِّين" (الإسلاميَّيْن)، وإنّما هو دعوةٌ إلى تأسيس "الإيمان" على حال التّأمُّل والتّدبُّر بحيث لا يعود "المؤمن" في وَضْع يُظْهِرُه كما لو كان بلا عقلٍ أو يَعْترِي عقلَه نقصٌ بالمُقارَنةً مع الذين يَحْرِصون - بمناسبةٍ أو من دونها - على إدِّعاء التّميُّز بالعقل في تمامه.
وعليه، فليس الغرض إقناع القارئ بما لا يُريد أو ثَنْيَه عمّا يَعتقد، بل المطلوب تأكيد أنّ "المؤمن" و"الملحد" يستطيعان أن يَتحاوَرا طلباً لنوع من التّفاهُم الذي قد يجعل كُلاًّ منهما يُدْرك، في النِّهاية، أنّ الإختلافَ العَقَديّ أو الفلسفيّ لا يَصحّ أن يكون سبباً في التّنافي أو التّقاتُل (على الأقل فكريّاً وخطابيّاً إلى حدِّ شيطنة المُخالِف كما في الواقع المعِيش).
إنّه لا يكفي أن نَجْرُؤ على التّساؤُل، بل لا بُدّ من أن نَجرُؤ على مُساءلةِ التّساؤل نفسه في المدى الذي يُنْظَر إليه كــ "فعل يُؤسِّس ذاته" من دون أن يَؤُول إلى "النَّقْض" فيقف على حافةِ "العدم".
ولذا، فــ "الإيمان" ليس بالأمر الهَيِّن كما يَتراءى عادةً للمُتعاقلين، بل هو إقتحامٌ لعَقبات الوُجود والفعل في هذا العالَم بما لا يكاد يَخطُر على بال الذين لا يفعلون شيئاً أكثر من الإسراع إلى الحَسْم تحكُّماً أو تشهِّياً بإسْم "العقل" أو "العلم".
وبذلك المعنى، يَطلُب هذا الكتاب أن يُؤْخذ "الإيمانُ" بقُوةٍ لتحدِّي "الإلحاد" في عُقْر داره.
