سئل الجنيد يوماً عن حكايات الصالحين فقال: هي جند من جنود الله تعالى يقوم في أحوال المريدين، ويجبي بها معالم أسرار العارفين، ويهيج بها خواطر المحبين، ويجري بها دموع المشتاقين. قيل: فهل على ذلك من دليل؟ قال: تعم قوله تعالى: (] وكلاً نقص عليك من أنباء الرسل ما نثبت به فؤادك [). م، هذا المنطلق واستناداً لما دعا إليه الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم "اذكروا الصالحين يبارك عليكم" وقوله صلى الله عليه وسلم "عند ذكر الصالحين تنزل الرحمة"، جمع المؤلف في كتابه هذا ما تيسر من أخبار الصالحين، متحدثاً عن ما اشتملوا عليه في العبادة في ليلهم ونهارهم، ومضيفاً إلى ذلك وزيادة للفائدة، بعضاً من اللطائف والفوائد السنية، والزواجر للنفوس القوية من المواعظ القوية، مع ذكر ما يذكره من المسائل الفقهية والمنافع الطبية، لعل في ذلك كله ترتاح النفس، وتسمو، وتصبح أكثر اقتراباً بخالقها ومعبودها.
