عندما نتحدث عن الحب في فرنسا، يحضر دائماً اسم الكاتب المسرحي الشهير راسين في غير مناسبة، خصوصاً عندما يتعلق الأمر باحلزن أو الهجر، المذكور راسين وليس كورناي، والناس يلفظون أبياته حتى من دون فهمها، من قبيل التعاطف والمشاعر المشتركة، ولغة تقرّب في ما بينهم، يمثل راسين التراث كله، لكن عندما نستمع إليه، فإنه يبدو، كما أنه سرّ، يلفه الكثير من الغموض، وتحوم ظلال حول هذا الرخام الأبيض والكلاسيكي، أرادت ناتالي أزولاي الذهاب لإستشفاف ما في الأمر عن كثب، وراحت تتصور حباً معاصراً، طيتس وبيرينيس اليوم، حيث تعاني بيرينيس الحزن والهجر وتسعى إلى التخفيف من ألمها بالعودة إلى المصدر، بيرينيس راسين، بل إلى ما بعدها، أي راسين نفسه، حياته، تناقضاته ولغته.
تريد بيرينيس ناتالي أزولاي أن يُفهم كيف أن رجلاً من بيئتها، وعصرها، محصور بين فرساي، وبور رويال، وبين التشدد الجانسيني وأبّهة لويس الرابع عشر، كان قادراً على كتابة أبيات بهذه الصوابية والقوة عن عاطفة الحب، لا سيما من وجهة نظر الإناث.
وبإيجاز، كيف استطاع رجل مثله كتابة أشياء مثل هذه، ذلك هو ما قصدته المؤلفة في هذه الرواية مع بعض الحرية وبالدقة التاريخية وإعتماداً على سيرة ذاتية مكنتها من أن تروي قصة غير موجودة في أي مكان موثق، إلا في لغة ومخيال تدرك هي وحدها تضاريسهما.
لم يتبقَّ من نصوص عن سيرة راسين إلا بعض الرسائل إلى ابنه، وبوالو، ولكن لا شيء من محتواها يفصح عمّا يدور من تنازع في مكنونه، ويقال إنَّ البقية تم إحراقها.
من المؤكد أن هذه الرواية تمرّ على الوقائع والتواريخ ولكن هذه لبيت سوى أبواب، كما هو الحال في درب متعرجة، نسقط بينها، ونبني تصورات، ثم نكتب وندفع بها من دون أن نخشى أية عقوبة.
