هذا الكتاب مهم في تاريخ الطائفة الختمية، بل لعله أهم الأدبيات التاريخية لهذه الطائفة، وقد أعده أحد خلفاء الختمية، وكان أيضاً عالماً وشاعراً يتضمن الكتاب، حقائق هامة أصول تاريخ هذه الطائفة والذي تداخل الختمية تعني الطريقة التي أسسها محمد عثمان الميرغني، كما تعني إثبات هذه الطريقة فيه جانب مهم من تاريخ السودان الحديث، جعل ابن إدريس في مقدمة وخطبة و12 فصلاً، وقد بين في المقدمة المنسابة التي دعت إلى تأليف الكتاب، وفي الفصول الخمسة الأولى أورد منشأة محمد عثماني الميرغني وتربيته وطوافه وتبشيره في الحبشة وصعيد مصر والسودان وما لاقاه من نجاح وما اعترضه من مصاعب وكبار من تلقوا عنه، وذكر في الفصل السادس نسبه، وانتهى بقصيدة من تأليفه في النسب، وتعرض في الفصل السابع إلى ذرية محمد عثمان مذكراً أبناءه وأحفاده، وأورد في الفصل الثامن أوصافه، وجملة من أقوال أهل الكشف بما ينبئ عن ظهوره في الفصل التاسع، ثم يورد في الفصل العاشر جملة من الأقوال التي ذكرها محمد عثمان عن نفسه من بابا الكرامات والجدارة، وغرضه من ذلك أن يبين سمر موقعه الولاية، وقد بث ابن إدريس قدراً من الكرامات من أطراف الكتاب حسب مناسباتها ثم خصص لها هذا لفصل، وفي الفصلين الحادي عشر والثاني عشر ذكر مؤلفات محمد عثمان وهي مؤلفات في العلوم النقلية كالتفسير والحديث والنحو ومؤلفات في باب التصوف ومنها أدعية وأوراد وشعر، وبعد أن فرغ من الأوراد أضاف مادة جديدة من الشعر والمراسلات.
