وبطله في هذا المجال هو بيري ماسون المحامي النابغ الذي اتخذه مؤلف الرواية بطل رواياته البوليسية، وقد استطاع هذا المحامي أن ينقد ديانا الشقراء البريئة من تهمة القتل التي ألصقها بها البوليس واجتهد في إثبات الجريمة عليها بكل الطرق. ولكت ماسون لم ييأس في البحث عن الحقيقة، وتابع مساعيه العجيبة في كشف غوامض الجريمة متحدياً البوليس الرسمي مستخدماُ جميع مواهبه في إماطة اللثام عن القاتل الحقيقي حتى وفق في النهاية إليه، فأنقذ البريئة بعد أن تعرض لأحداث رهيبة!.
