الأحجار الكريمة والجواهر التي عثر عليها علماء الآثار في قبور القدماء تدل على أن الإنسان قد عرف واستعمل الأحجار الكريمة منذ أكثر من خمسة وعشرين ألف عام قبل الميلاد. ومن ناحية أخرى يبلغ حجم التجارة الدولية للحجارة الكريمة ما لا يقل عن (الألف بليون دولار في العام الواحد". لذلك وجد الدكتور خالد الشمالي أنه من الضروري أن يكون (الكتاب الثاني) من سلسلة كتابه الخاصة بعلوم وتكنولوجيا وصناعات الصخور والمعادن السيليكاتية والصلصالية، أن يتناول (المعادن والأحجار الكريمة) (السيليكاتية وغير السيليكاتية) نظراً لأهميتها الكبيرة في العالم منذ فجر التاريخ وحتى يومنا هذا. ولعل ما يجعل هذا الكتاب أكثر ضرورة وأهمية هو عدم وجود دراسة جادة ومفصلة لهذا الموضوع في المكتبة العربية وباللغة العربية.
وإنه وكما درج في كتابه الأول فقد شرح وفصل موضوع المعادن و الأحجار الكريمة بالمعلومات المبسطة والميسرة حتى يستطيع أن يقرأها ويستوعبها الإنسان العربي العادي، وبخاصة الصانع والتاجر والحرفي ومن شابههم. وما أورد من المعلومات السهلة، لم ينسيه أن يطرح معلومات علمية وتكنولوجية حول الموضوع حتى يستفيد منها الباحث المتبحر في الموضوع والذي يسعى إلى أوسع وأدق التفاصيل حتى تتم الفائدة المرجوة من هذا الكتاب.
وبالإضافة إلى ما أورده من معلومات مختصرة ومقتضبة، ومعلومات موسعة ومفصلة أيضاً، فإنه قد استعان بالرسومات وبالجداول وبالصور لزيادة الإيضاح ولتقريب المعلومات المقروءة والمجسمة للقارئ.
