لم يكن لأهل اليمن كتاب في التراجم على نمط كتاب ابن خلكان من حيث الترتيب على حروف المعجم؛ حتى جاء الملك الأفضل العباس بن علي الغساني الرسولي (778 هـ) وألف كتابه هذا، وقد قال عنه الخزرجي: "كان الملك الأفضل ملكا عالي الهمة، شديد البأس، حازماً يقظاً ذكياً، وكان فقيهاً نبيهاً، عارفاً بالفقه والنحو واللغة والأنساب والتواريخ".
وقد أرخ في كتابه مرحلة انتشار المذهب الشافعي باليمن في القرن الرابع الهجري، إلى زمن يحيى بن أبي الخير العمراني.
كما استعان الملك الأفضل بكتاب "السلوك" لبهاء الدين الجندي فهذب مادته، ورتبها على حروف المعجم وأضاف إلى التراجم أشياء من عنده من تراجم العلماء والأمراء الذين لم يذكرهم الجندي، وظهروا في دولة الملك الافصل، واختصر التراجم المطولة، واستعان ببعض الناس في استكمال ما قصر عنه الجندي-من حيث ضبط الوفيات، وهو الملك الذي لا يسمح له وقته بأكثر من ذلك -و ألحق تراجم أخرى لمشاهير عصره من العلماء والوزراء وخدم الدولة، ووصفهم بما يليق بحالهم.
