Book Description
كعب بن معدان الأشقري أحد الشعراء الأمويين المعروفين، ولد في عمان في القرن الهجري الأول، ورافق المهلب بن أبي صفرة و بنيه في فتوحاتهم في خراسان، و كان لحضور قبيلته الأزد أثر في شعره؛ إذ كانت تمثل هذه القبيلة الكبيرة أكثر المشاركين في الفتوحات و المعارك التي خاضها الجيش الأموي في فتوحاته و في حروبه ضد الخوارج، وكان كعب حاضراً في أكثر تلك الأحداث.
توترت العلاقة بين كعب وبين أبناء المهلب بعد وفاة أبيهم؛ بسبب انتقال ولاية خراسان الى قتيبة الباهلي خصم المهلب، مما جعل كعبا يتنكر ليزيد ويهجوه، فجر عليه ذلك أمورا لم يحسب حسابها، فهرب إلى عمان، لكنه قتل هناك.ما وصلنا من شعر كعب قليل مقارنة بأشعار معاصريه، على الرغم من أن الأخبار التي وردتنا عنه تشير الى أنه كان كثير الشعر: فقر قال المرزباني عنه: "إنه استفرغ شعره في مدح المهلب وولده"، و قد ذكر هو نفسه في إحدى قصائده أنه مدح آل المهلب خمسين عاماً، وقد قال شعراً في الفتوح وحروب الأزارقة، كما أنه هجا زياد الأعجم.
