تجاهلت المجتمعات البدائية الذهب على إعتبار أنه أقل فائدة من الحديد والنحاس والمعادن الأخرى التي كانت تستخدم في صنع الأدوات والأسلحة الفعالة، ولكن ما إن بلغت مرحلة متطورة ارتبطت فيها المنزلة الإجتماعية مع التباهي بإستعراض الثراء، حتى تبوأ الذهب مكانته المرموقة التي جعلت الناس يزدادون شفعاً به مع مرور الأيام، وقد انعكس ذلك في القصص الخيالية والحكايات الخرافية التي لا تخلو من وصف لشيء ذهبي، فهناك أميرات بشعر ذهبي، وطائر ذهبي ينقل الأخبار، وفارس شجاع يلوح يسيف ذهبي.
أما في الواقع فكان الذهب نعمة ممزوجة بنقمة، وسبباً للنزاع والكوارث، حيث تعرض السكان الأصليون في أمريكا الجنوبية والوسطى إلى إحتلال وحشي، ومجازر على يد الأوروبيين المدفوعين بجشعهم لأمتلاك الذهب، في حين اجتاحت كاليفورنيا حتى التنقيب عن الذهب وحدثت المآسي وخيبات الأمل المتكررة.
في هذا الكتاب الحافل باللوحات والصور تستعرض سوزان لانيس تاريخ الذهب وخصائصه التي منحته سلطة لا تضاهى على الذهن البشري، بدءاً من إستخدامه في قبور القدماء ذوي المكانة الرفيعة، وإنتهاءً بالحلى والمجوهرات البراقة التي يتزيّن بها الناس للإستعراض العام في الوقت الحاضر.
وتجادل المؤلفة أن المعدن الأصفر يثير الإعجاب كما يثير الحسد في الآن ذاته، ويحظى بالثقة في الحفاظ على قيمته، ولا سيما إبان الأزمات الإقتصادية، بيد أنه ليس أهلاً للثقة بإعتباره مصدر إفساد للقيم الأخلاقية.
