يندرج هذا الكتاب ضمن سلسة الرحلات الغربية الإستكشافية التي حاولت التوغل داخل شبه الجزيرة العربية والتعريف بما يعتبر بالنسبة للغرب آنذاك، أي ثلاثينيات القرن التاسع عشر الميلادي، أصقاعاً مجهولة من بلاد العرب. وكان من أهم تلك البقاع المجهولة صحراء الربع الخالي والأجزاء الداخلية من حضر موت وعمان وأنحاء من نجد والأفلاج.
كان مؤلف الكتاب الملازم أول ج. آرويلستد ( 1842- 1805م) الشاب الإنجليزي الطموح يأمل في أن يحالفه الحظ في اختراق جزيرة العرب المجهولة.. وماقدمه من وصف ومعلومات عن المناطق التي تجول بها داخل عمان وعلى السواحل الجنوبية لشبه الجزيرة العربية وعلى امتداد الساحل الشرقي للبحر الأحمر، تضمن الكثير من الإستكشافات الجديدة في عصره وبالتحديد في ما يخص مناطق عمان الداخلية وكذلك اكتشاف الكتابات الحميرية في منطقة نقب الهجر وميناء حصن الغراب في بلاد الواحدي الواقعة غربي حضر موت.
