يبحث الكتاب في الإجتماع السوري كواقع جغرافي سياسي محدد محكوم تاريخياً بعروبته وجغرافياً بمواجهة إسرائيل التي تحتل جزءاً من أراضيه. ويتناول بالبحث والنقد الخطاب الثقافي السياسي السوري الرائج، وخاصة المعارض، بتحولاته الأخيرة نحو تبني الديمقراطية، متسائلاً إن كان ذلك أصيلاً لديه أم تقليداً لموجة الخطاب الديمقراطي العالمي.
