يفجر هذا الكتاب كل معارفنا اليقينية عن أول ديانة توحيدية في التاريخ، ويعيد تأويلها بعكس منطوقها الظاهري. ويستثير فينا بالتالي ضرورة إعادة النظر من جديد في كل تاريخ البشرية، بل وفي اعتقاداتها واعتقاداتنا أيضاً. فهذا الكتاب، الذي لا يحمل إدانة للتوراة أو تكذيباً لها، سيبحث في خباياها التي أودعها إياها كتبتها، ليستنتج أن التوراة ليست سوى مدونة للشعب المصري، الذي كانت قد وقعت بلاده تحت نير الغزاة البابليين، وللديانة الفرعونية التي كانت أول ديانة توحيدية في التاريخ.
ويبين لنا الكتاب أن العبرانيين ليسوا سوى شعب خيالي وليس لهم أي حقيقة تاريخية. فهم أنفسهم المصريون بعد أن خسروا حضارتهم تحت وقع الغزاة، وليس موسى غير رعمسيس الأول، وليس هارون غير الفرعون حورمحب. بل إن إله التوراة ليس غير إله الفراعنة نفسه.
لا يتوصل الكاتب الى نتائجه هذه من خلال تفسير تأملي للنصوص التوراتية، بل عبر مقارنة مشبوكة مع النصوص الفرعونية المصرية ومع التلمود (تلمود بابل وتلمود أورشليم) ومع القبّالة وهي الكتاب الجامع للمرويات والموروثات الشفهية التي تناقلها الحاخامات سراً يوماً بعد يوم، معتمداً على ما انتهى إليه غيره من الباحثين وعلماء المصريات الذين فكروا في هذا الإتجاه.
مؤلف هذا الكتاب، روجيه صبّاح، ينتمي الى أسرة عريقة من الحاخاميين والربانيين وهو يتقن الآرامية فضلاً عن العبرية التوراتية، وقد أقام في مصر عدة سنوات لإعداد بحثه، وكان أصدر مع أخيه الراحل مسعود صبّاح كتاباً عن أسرار سفر الخروج أثار في حين صدوره ضجة كبيرة وترجم الى العديد من اللغات العالمية.
