حين أقدمت على ذكر هذا التغيّر المفاجئ أمام آنج، على طاولة العشاء، أجابني، بعد تردّدٍ قليلٍ حياءً أو حرجاً، أنّه لاحظ الشيء نفسه فيما يخصّه، ثمّ سألني وهو يحدّق إليّ إنْ كان التلامذة، برأيي، يعيبون عليه شيئاً ما أم أنّهم كانوا يريدون إستهدافي عبره لمعرفتهم بأنّني زوجته.
أثار هذا السؤال حيرتي: فما الذي فعلتُه، وبحقّ من؟...
كان القلق بشأني يطفح من عينَي آنج وكأنّه يودّ أن أقول له إنّه هو، هو وحده، من تستهدفه نظرات تلاميذه الخبيثة، أو إنّه إليه بالذات تتّجه نظرات تلامذتي المصوّبة نحوي...
أنهينا طعامنا بصمتٍ، وكلانا واعٍ بالمخاوف التي تختلج في فكر الآخر، لكنّ أحداً منّا لم يكن يجرؤ على المكاشفة بها بصراحة لأنّنا كنّا معتادين على السلام والتناغم والتفهّم التلقائيّ لكلّ ما يحيط بنا.
وهكذا، بمعنىً ما، كان خوفنا بالذات يروّعنا وكأنّه وصمة عار.
