أصل هذا الكتاب (مقال) نشره المؤلف يوسف نجا في مجلة الرابطة الإسلامية الصادرة في بيروت سنة (1352ه) تحت عنوان "الأمة العربية بين الماضي والحاضر" وبعنوان فرعي: الفوارق ما بين أمسها الدابر ويومها الحاضر .. عظة الدهر ما بين العظمة والإجلال والإستصغار والإستعباد والإستقلال.
وفي الكتاب / المقال يُجري المؤلف مقارنة ما بين أمس الأمة العربية وحاضرها في مختلف ميادين العلم والمعرفة والبطولات التي حققوها، فيبدأ بتذكير القارىء أنهم فتحوا بلاد فارس وغزوا آسيا الصغرى وشمالي افريقيا وفتحوا الأندلس، وتفوقوا في الأدب العربي والعلوم الطبيعية وبنوا معاهد العلم والمدارس والجامعات في أمهات المدن كبغداد والقاهرة وقرطبة وبنوا الجوامع والقصور ونبغوا في الفن المعماري، كما يورد المؤلف في فصل خاص "صفحة من صفحات العرب الخالدة في حياتهم الجديدة .. النهضة العربية في مصر، وسورية، والعراق، وفلسطين، وجزيرة العرب، والمغرب". وفي هذه الصفحة يصف المؤلف "الوضعية التي تقلبت على مهدها هذه الأقطار العربية والأمصار" في البلدان الآنفة الذكر، وأخيراً يدعو العرب إلى الإتحاد، وإلى العلم، وإلى التآخي والتعاضد والتآزر.
