هذا كتاب "معالم التنزيل" بأجزائه الأربعة للإمام المفسر المتقن، الحافظ الجليل، الفقيه البارع، الإمام البغوي. وقد أخرج في هذا المؤلف بصورة مستقلة لأول مرة، بعدما كان يطبع على هوامش كتب التفسير الأخرى، وذلك لجليل شأن هذا التفسير، الذي يعتبر من التفاسير المعتمدة، وهو من أجلّ كتب التفسير التي انتهت إلينا من تراث السلف الصالح، ترتيباً وتنقيحاً وتوثقاً وإحكاماً، وإحاطة بجوانب ما يتعلق بتفسير القرآن الكريم.
وقد كان منهج الإمام البغوي في تفسيره للقرآن الكريم فريد متميز عن باقي كتب التفسير، سلك فيه المسلك الذي ينبئ عن مدى عمق تفكيره في فهم وإدراك النص القرآني، حيث جمع كتاباً متوسطاً بين الطويل الممل والقصير المخلّ. وكان يذكر أسماء المفسرين الذين روى عنهم التفسير، من الصحابة والتابعين، كما يذكر أسماء القراء الذين يروي عنهم قراءاتهم. وأنه أخذها ممن اشتهرت قراءته.
لقد سلك الإمام البغوي في منهجه المسلك الوسط بلفظ موجز وسهل، وقد اعتمد في بيان معاني الآيات أحسن طرق التفسير؛ فهو يفسر الآية بالقرآن وقراءاته، ثم بالأحاديث الثابتة، ثم بأقوال الصحابة والتابعين والأمة المجتهدين، ثم يورد أسباب النزول المروية عنهم، ثم يذكر الأحكام الفقهية المتعلقة بالآيات القرآنية.
وهو يسوق الأحاديث بأسانيدها المثبتة التي اشترط فيها الصحة أو الحسن، أما ما يذكره عن الصحابة أو التابعين من الروايات فغالباً يذكرها بلا إسناد، وذلك لأنه ذكر في مقدمته إسناده إلى كل من يروي عنهم، وهو يذكر الخلافات عن السلف في التفسير ويعدد عنهم الروايات في ذلك، ولا يرجح بعضها على بعض أو يقدح بشيء منها، وذلك إشارة منه إلى أن معنى الآية ربما يحتمل جميع المعاني أو أكثرها، وهذه ميزة يمتاز بها البغوي في تفسيره عن باقي التفاسير، وقد تحاشى ما ولع به كثير من المفسرين من مباحث الإعراب ونكت البلاغة. وإذا ذكر منها شيئاً، فإنما يؤكد ما هو ضروري لكشف المعنى وإيضاح المراد من الآية، ثم إنه تحاشى أيضاً ذكر المسائل الكلامية في آيات العقيدة والصفات، واكتفى بإيراد منهج السلف فيما يتعلق بها. وغرض الإمام البغوي في تفسيره هذا هو وضع منهج سلفي في تفسير القرآن الكريم، يكون مناراً للمفسرين يسلكون سبيله ويقتفون أثره.
