من "عصر الإستكشاف" إلى "عصر الإستعمار"، خرج الأوروبيون إلى العالم لفتح الطرق التجارية وتأسيس المستعمرات، وعادوا منه وإليه حاملين في ركابهم الذهب والفضة والحرير والتوابل والثروات، وفي رؤوسهم الأفكار والإنطباعات والأحكام عن الشعوب والثقافات الأخرى، وكانت في معظمها متحيّزة وعدائية ودونية وإزدرائية، وبقيت فضلتها الفاعلة إلى اليوم متشبّثة بالأذهان الأوروبية.
في هذا الكتاب، الذي قال إدوارد سعيد إنه أحد أهم مصادر الإستشراق، يستعرض كيرنان كيف - ويعلل أيضاً لماذا - حوّلت أوروبا تفوّقها العسكري والإقتصادي والتقاني إلى تفوّق أخلاقي وثقافي وديني؛ إعتماداً على داروينية إجتماعية وثقافية ملفّقة، وحلّاً لأزمة داخلية قلبت التراتبية الطبقية الأوروبية إلى وطنية مزيّفة، ومساواة مزوّرة، وعنصرية صريحة يشارك فيها الجميع بأوهام التفوّق على الآخر، و"الكلام عن بربرية العالم الخارجي وظلامه وظلاميّته".
ورغم أن كيرنان، على عكس سعيد، لا يؤمثل بل ينتقد سلبيات الثقافات الأخرى (من حرق الأرامل في الهند الهندوسية إلى طغيان ملوك الإنكا في أميركا الجنوبية)، فإنه يؤكِّد، مستخدماً ترسانة اللغة الإنكليزية البلاغية كلّها، إن النظرة الأوروبية الدونية لثقافة الآخر وبدائيته المتأصّلة كانت "مجرّد وسيلة لتلفيق صورة إيجابية - متسامية للذات الأوروبية".
ربما لذلك يبدو اليوم، كما في عصرّي الإستكشاف والإستعمار، أنه كلما إزدادت أوروبا تجانساً في الداخل، تعاظم إستبدادها وتفاقم بطشها في الخارج.
