لقد صنف العلماء في عمل اليوم والليلة والدعوات والأذكار كتباً كثيرة، ولكنها كانت مطولة بالأسانيد والتكرير. فضعف ذلك عن همم الطالبين، فقصد المؤلف الإمام النووي تسهيل ذلك على الراغبين، فجمع في هذا الكتاب مختصراً مقاصد ما جاء في الكتب المطولة من عمل اليوم والليلة والأذكار والدعوات، فحذف الأسانيد في معظمه إيثاراً للاقتصار، ولكونه موضوعاً للمتعبدين فليس لهم من أمر الأسانيد غاية.
فالمقصود هو معرفة الأذكار والعمل بها مع إيضاح مظانها للمسترشدين وبيان صحيح الأحاديث وحسنها وضعيفها ومنكرها. فهذا ما يجب الاعتناء به. واقتصر في كتابه هذا على الأحاديث التي في الكتب المشهورة التي هي أصول الإسلام.
