تعد الجغرافيا السياسية غصناً متميزاً - سريع النمو - من غصون علم الجغرافيا، وتتسم بكونها من أكثر التخصصات الجغرافية التي تعالج المشكلات القائمة في الخريطة السياسية ضمن المستويات المختلفة المحلية والقطرية والدولية والعالمية بسواء؛ فهي تهدف إلى فهم السلوك السياسي للإنسان من خلال ربط وتحليل التفاعلات السياسية المتطورة والسريعة الإيقاع، فالحركة المستمرة للجغرافيا السياسية ودفعت البعض إلى أن يطلق عليها تسمية: (الوليد غير الشرعي للجغرافيا)، وقد تشاركها فروع الجغرافيا الإقتصادية بهذه الخاصية.

وتبقى الجغرافيا السياسية هي التخصص البارز السريع التطور طبقاً للتطورات الحاصلة في الخريطة السياسية طالما أن الدولة هي وحدة الدراسة في هذا التخصص، يقابلها الإقليم في عموم الدراسات الجغرافية، والدولة تكوين بشري لا يتسم بالثبات مهما طال الزمن أو قصر، ولا بد من تغيرات جوهرية في السياسات الداخلية بسواء.

والجغرافيا السياسية تهتم بالسلوك السياسي بين الدول في ظروف السلم والحرب بسواء، فالدولة - وحدة الدراسة - هي الأرومة التي تجمع الجغرافيا السياسية بفروع الجغرافيا الإجتماعية الأخرى: جغرافية السكان وجغرافية الحضر.

فالدولة مجموعة من البشر حاكمون ومحكومون يتفاعلون في وحدة مكانية لها ظروفها ومقوماتها مما يجعلها تتخذ سلوكاً يعبر عن آمال سكانها من ناحية وتتناسب وإمكانياتها وظروفها من ناحية أخرى.

وترتيباً على ما تقدم فقد جاء هذا الكتاب بسبعة فصول: عالج الفصل الأول منها منهجية البحث في الجغرافيا السياسية بدأ من ظهور الجغرافيا السياسية والجيولولتيكا مروراً بمناهج البحث والوسائل الكمية للقياس لكافة معطيات هذا التخصص، وانفرد الفصل الثاني بتحليل عناصر الهيئة الطبيعية في تركيبة الدول من وجهة نظر الجغرافيا السياسية من الخصائص المكانية للموقع مروراً بالسمات الطوبغرافية والفيزايوغرافية وإنتهاءً بمرتكزات الجغرافيا الحيوية للدولة، ويتشابه الفصلين التاليين الثالث والرابع نظيرهما الفصل الثاني لكنهما تخصصا بدراسة البنية الإقتصادية والإجتماعية على التوالي.

بيد أن الفصلين الخامس والسادس تطرقا لموضوعات التخوم والحدود الدولية في الفصل الخامس، ونظريات الإستراتيجية الدولية بالفصل السادس، واختتم الكتاب بالفصل السابع الذي اهتم بدراسة الجيولولتيكا التطبيقية لدول البحر المتوسط العربية، التي غدت الآن (2008) محط إهتمام الإمبراطورية الحالية (الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية) وإمبراطورية الأمس (فرنسا).
