يعد مرض نقص المناعة المكتسبة (الإيدز) الناشئ عن فيروس "إتش.آي.في" (HIV ) مرضاً خبيثاً وجديداً على نحو يدعو للذهول والفزع في آن معاً. فقيل جيل واحد فقط، كان لا يزال مرض الإيدز كامناً ولم يكتشف بعد. ومع ذلك، ووفقاً لتقديرات برنامج الأمم المتحدة لمكافحة الإيدز (UNAIDS)، فقد بلغ عدد المصابين بهذا المرض نحو 65 مليون شخص، وربما توفي منهم فعلاً 25 مليون شخص وذلك خلال العقيدين المنصرمين، ويكاد يكون هذا الداء مهلكاً لا محالة، ولا يرى العلماء أي علاج يلوح في الأفق. ويبدو كما لو أن المرض قد ينتهي به المطاق على رأس قائمة الأوبئة المعدية الفتاكة على امتداد القرن الحادي والعشرين.
ومع أنه بات ذا طابع عالمي، فإن وباء الإيدز يتركز بشكل ساحق حالياً في دول منطقة أفريقيا جنوب الصحراء. ورغم أن هذا الوضع قد اقتضى ثمناً بشرياً مروعاً، فإن بقية أنحاء العالم لم تتأثر بشكل واسع بمأساة أفريقيا. بيد أن الأمور ستكون مختلفة كثيراً في المنطقة الرئيسية اللاحقة التي سيصيبها فيروس "اتش.أي في" بالعدوى، فمن المرجح أن أوراسيا (والتي تضم لأغراض هذه الدراسة قارة آسيا إضافة إلى روسيا) ستغدو طناً للعدد الأكبر من ضحايا هذا الفيروس في العقود المقبلة. ونتيجة انتشار المرض في أكبر ثلاث دول في تلك المنطقة، ألا وهي الصين والهند وروسيا، فسوف يهدد هذا الوباء الأوراسي القادم بتعطيل حجم التوقعات الاقتصادية، والتي تقدر بالمليارات، وتغير التوازن العسكري العالمي. وعلى الرغم من أن الخسائر المدمرة الناجمة عن هذا المرض واضحة للعيان، فإن من غير الواضح مقدار الجهد الذي ينبغي بذله لدرء خطر هذه المأساة.
