تنم كل فعالية تربوية بموجب مضمرة أو ظاهرة. " فالطريق " التي نسلكها لتحقيق التربية هي دائماً طريق محددة ومن طبيعة معينة. والعمليات التي ننجزها لتحقيق العملية التربوية، إنما هي عمليات منظمة دوماً بصورة من الصور. ولذا فإن على الدراسة الكاملة للطرق التربوية، أن تأخذ كامل مداها، ولكنه لا يجوز أن ننسى أن علم التربية ما هو إلا " نظرية عملية ". وسنعنى عل كل حال بدراسة مشكلات الطرق في التربية بشكلها الحالي. ولذا فإننا لن نقوم هنا بدراسة عامة لطرق التربية، ولكننا سنتفحص الإتجاهات المختلفة القائمة حالياً. وسنضرب الأمثلة المختلفة عن الطرق التي تم تنظيما بوضوح. لنكتشف بهذا الشكل مصادر الإلهام التي أوحت بها ومختلف الأسباب التي يمكن بواسطتها تبرير إستخدام تلك الطرق. ويبدو أن الظاهرة الهامة والحديثة نسبياً هي ظاهرة إدخال الآفاق الموضوعية والمنهجية لعلم النفس في علم التربية. ولذا فإننا سنستهل بحثنا بدراسة العلاقات الحقيقية التي يمكن أن تربط بين علم نفس الطفل وعلم النفس التربوي وعلم التربية. وليست مشكلة الطرق في التربية مجرد مشكلة نفسية وتربوية. إذ أنها فضلاً عن ذلك مشكلة إجتماعية. وسنحاول إثبات ذلك في مستهل خاتمة الكتاب. وأخيراً سنرى أننا، من الناحية العملية، سنتوصل إلى بعض التوجيهات الحذرة التي تبدو لنا إيجابية وقابلة لتحقيق التطور في مجال، يبدو أنه ينبغي أن يبقى مفتوحاً. ولقد إقتصرنا على بحث مشكلة التربية المدرسية، متجنبين دراسة العلاقات بين الأهل والأطفال لأنها قد تقودنا بعيداً. وفي هذه الشروط، لم يعد من الضروري التذكير بالتحليل النفسي. ولذا فإننا نحرص لهذا الموضوع أيضاً.
