لقد شكّلت عُمان عبر تاريخها القديم والحديث مركزاً حضارياً فاعلاً ومتفاعلاً مع مختلف الشعوب ، نتيجة موقعها الجغرافي على طرق القوافل التجارية البرية التي تنتهي عندها ، واقصد بذلك ( شبه القارة الهندية ) ، فمن البر العُماني تبدأ رحلات لا تنتهي إلى مشارق الأرض ومغاربها تحمل البضائع والمواد الأولية والمصنوعات ، من هنا تمر أيضاً أحد أهم طرق الحرير ، ما جعلها مركزاً بحرياً وتجارياً مزدهراً على بحر العرب ، وصولاً إلى المحيط الهندي .
وتشير الكثير من البحوث التاريخية والإقتصادية إلى الصلات المتينة التي أرساها العُمانيون وحضارات الشرق القديم في الصين والهند وبلاد ما بين النهرين وفارس ، إضافة إلى العلاقات التي أرساها أهل عُمان مع بلاد الشام ومصر ودول حوض البحر البيض المتوسط ، كما كان للعمانيين الإسهامات الكبرى في الدعوة الإسلامية في البلدان التي وصلت إليها تجارتهم ، خاصة في دول آسيا وأفريقيا .
لقد شكّل التاريخ العُماني قبسات حضارية ، ليس للشعب العُماني فحسب ، بل لكل الشعوب التي تواصل العمانيون معها ، وتمثّلت السياسة العُمانية المستقرة والهادئة في استقرار الحكم فيها وفي البلدان التي خضعت لسلطتها قبل أن تتدخل الدول الأوروبية لتقليص نفوذها عن مناطق شاسعة في افريقيا وآسيا تفوق مساحة عُمان الحالية مرات عدة .
