هذه صفحات تقص على القارئ خبر ظاهرة غنية من ظواهر عبقرية المسلمين السالفة، هي قصة الساعات المائية الدقاقة التي هي نوع من أنواع الهندسة الميكانيكية، كان للمسلمين فيه فضل التقدم والنشر: وقد تحدث هذا الإنجاز عن قدرة العقل الهندسي على الإبداع ووضع التصاميم المعقدة. إن أبحاث الساعات تدور كلها في تلك الهندسة الميكانيكية. فقبل أكثر من مائتين وألف عام قدم الخليفة العباسي هارون الرشيد إلى امبراطور فرنسا شاركان ساعة دقاقة أذهلت رجال البلاط الفرنسي وظنوا حين سمعوا دقاتها أنها تضم بعض الجن والعفاريت. ومن الواضح ان هذه الحادثة التاريخية دليل على الفجوة العلمية التي كانت تفصل بين العالم الإسلامي المتقدم وبين الغرب المتخلف آنذاك. هذا الإنجاز هو موضوع البحث في هذا الكتاب وغايته للسير على اطلاع هذا الجبل على إبداع أجدادهم الذي سجل كل مجالات العلم دون استثناء ليكون ذلك حافزاً لهم.
