يعد الإمام المناوي من كبار العلماء في عصره، ومن المؤلفين المكثرين في مختلف العلوم والفنون، إلا أنه اشتهر بين أهل العلم بمؤلفاته في الحديث وشروح كتبه التي بلغت واحد وتسعين مؤلفاً نذكر منها: الاتحافات السنية في الأحاديث القدسية، وفيض القدير في شرح الجامع الصغير، والروض الباسم في شمائل المصطفى أبي القاسم وهو الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا، وقد أخطأ من ظن أنه شرح للشمائل المحمدية للترمذي إنما هو شمائل الترمذي وزيادات عليه بلغت بمقدار الثلثين.
وفيه كما قلنا ذكر لشمائل المصطفى (صلى الله عليه وسلم) القلبية والخلقية وكمالاته النفسية والروحية والعقلية ولأهمية هذا الكتاب اعتنى "محمد عادل الكيالي" بتحقيق مادته تحقيقاً كاملاً يجلى من خلاله ما شابها من أخطاء وإسقاطات، وبالرجوع إلى نطاق عمله نجد أنه يتجلى بـ: أولاً: قام بنسخ الكتاب على الطريقة الإملائية الحديثة، ثانياً: قام بترقيم الأحاديث، ثالثاً: خبط الأحاديث معتمداً على كتب الأحاديث واللغة وغريب الحديث، رابعاً علق على النص بتخريج الأحاديث وعزوها إلى مظانها وبيان درجتها غالباً: خامساً: شرح الألفاظ اللغوية التي تحتاج إلى شرح بما يوضح النص. سادساً: قدم للكتاب بترجمة موجزة للمؤلف بين فيها علو منزلته وبخاصة في علم الحديث النبوي. سابعاً: وضع فهارس للموضوعات.
هذا الكتاب للحافظ المناوي اختصر فيه الشمائل المحمدية للإمام الترمذي وزاد عليه بمقدار الثلثين، ونافت أحاديثه على الألف ومائة، بينما أبوابه كانت سبعين بابا، تحدثت عن جمال هذا الرسول الكريم صلى الله عليه وسلم ومحاسنه الخلقية والخلقية وكمالاته النفسية والروحية والقلبية والعقلية، وأقواله وأحواله، وسجاياه الكريمة، وأخلاقه العظيمة كما وقفت على أحواله صلى الله عليه وسلم في عبادته , وذكره لربه، ودعائه له، وكريم عشرته , ومزاحه، ومحاسن صورته، وحلاوة منطقه، وقوة سمعه الشريف، وعذوبة صوته...
