المستشرقون إذا درسوا قضية لا علاقة لها بالإسلام والمسلمين نجدهم ذوي منهج علمي وذوي التزام بالموضوعية والحيدة في الإطار الذي تسمح به القدرة البشرية, أما حين الاقتراب من الدائرة الإسلامية عقيدة أو تطبيقاً فإن مؤثرات مختلفة تتدافع لتنحرف بالمنهج الاستشراقي وتدفع به إلى دوائر اللامنهجية واللاموضوعية, والأمر يشتد إذا تلامست خطوط البحث ودوائره مع التراث العربي والإسلامي ومن هنا كان هذا العمل سيراً في هذا الاتجاه . ويبحث في علم من أعلام الفكر الإسلامي الذي اهتم به المستشرقون كثيراً ليكون النموذج التطبيقي لهذه الدراسة فتمثل أمامي المفكر الإسلامي ابن خلدون. ويبحث الكتاب بالمواضيع التالية: الاستشراق ومفهومه وتاريخه ودوافعه وأهدافه ووسائله و منافذ الفكر الاستشراقي إلى عالمنا وموقف المشارقة من الاستشراق وكيفية بناء موقف علمي منه ومدارس الاستشراق والاهتمام المعاصر بالشرق وأهم مراكزه والمسشرقون والتراث الإسلامي ومنهج البحث الاستشراقي في الدراسات الإسلامية. وعن ابن خلدون ونسبه ومولده وحياته وشخصيته و آثاره و علومه و منهجية بحثه. والمستشرقون وابن خلدون وأشهر المتعاملين مع فكره وأهم أعمالهم وشهرته وأسباب اهتمام الغربيين به ومظاهر مكانته عندهم واستفادتهم منه. منهج الغربيين في دراسة التراث الخلدوني دراسة نقدية والتناقض في التعامل معه واجتثاثه من جذوره الإسلامية والأثر الغربي في الفكر العربي و القول في شخصيته ونظرياته.
