"الشيروكي" من أهم خمسمئة واثنتين وستين قبيلة تشكل سكان أمريكا الشمالية الأصليين، سماهم المستعمرون البيض (الهنود الحمر)، استناداً لظن (كريستوفر كولومبوس) الخاطئ، أنه وصل وصل الهند حين وصل بلادهم في أكتوبر 1492م. و"الشيروكي" أكبر قبائل أمريكا، وتعد إحدى القبائل الخمس المتحضرة، منذ القرن التاسع عشر، وعندما رُحل الهنود من الجنوب إلى غرب نهر(الميسيسيبي) قطنوا بيئة جغرافية متنوعة شملت ولايات (ألاباما، جورجيا، كنتاكي، نورث كارولينا، ساوث كارولينا، وفرجينيا)، فشاعت في حكاياتهم الشعبية أسماء أنهارها وجبالها وسهولها وقراها وحيواناتها ونباتاتها الكثيرة المميزة. لا تسمي "الشيروكي" حكاياتها هذه أساطير، فهي تمثل لهم تعاليم مقدسة فسر بها أجدادهم وحكاؤهم حقائق الكون والوجود الخالدة، واعتبروها تخصهم وحدهم، فلا يجوز للآخرين سردها وإخبارها.
