يتناول المؤلف في هذا الكتاب المسيرة التاريخية للحوزات والجامعات، وجاء ذلك ضمن بحث تضمن أربعة أقسام هي: 1-نموذج الحوزات الدينية، نشوؤها وتطورها، تحدث فيه المؤلف عن الأدوار التي مرت على المسلمين منذ نشوء علم الفقه، وكيفية نشوء الحوزات ودوافع الإنشاء، وزمن النشوء والمواكبة الفقهية لتطور الحياة، 2-صراع الأجيال سنة طبيعية: تناول المؤلف في هذا القسم مسألة الاختلاف في وجهات النظر داخل البيت الإسلامي أو البيت المذهبي حول أساليب التربية وكيفية التدريس ومواد الدراسة في الحوزة وعمليات التجديد المستمدة، 3-المميزات والفوارق: تناول المؤلف في هذا القسم الحديث عن أهم الميزات والفوارق وعن الاستقلالية، وعن باب الاجتهاد والأممية والنظام التعليمي ومميزاته، ومن ثم عن الدور السياسي والاجتماعي والثقافي، وعن أمكنة التعليم وحلقات الدراسة والمدرسون ومهنة التعليم والتلاميذ والطلبة، 4-وفي القسم الرابع جاء الحديث على أربعة أصعدة وهي: الصعيد الإداري، والصعيد التربوي، والصعيد الفني، والصعيد المنهجي.
وتميز هذا البحث بالمقارنة الهادفة وذلك كله من خلال مصادر مثبتة وخبرة ميدانية عاشها المؤلف في المشروعين العلميين-الحوزة والجامعة-فتحت صياغة البحث الذي اشفع باقتراحات المؤلف في الخاتمة لغرض التطوير.
