في عمله هذا يقرأ الدكتور مصعب العدواني لعبة الشطرنج بوصفها نصاً له سياقاته الثقافية، فهو يرى أنه من الممكن أن يقرأ نص الشطرنج من جوانب مختلفة منها الجانب الزمني التراكمي بما يحمله عن هذه اللعبة من تعاريف معجمية وتاريخ نشوء اللعبة واستلهام الحكاية أو الشعر لها، وموقف علماء الدين وفتاواهم فيها، وأقوال العرب فيها مدحاً وقدحاً. ومن الممكن قراءة هذا النص بوصفه لعبة تحقق الجانب الآني الوصفي حيث الوصف للرقعة الخارجية للشطرنج والأحجار ومسمياتها وآليات العمل بها، والكشف عن قوانينها الخاصة وبنيتي المكان والزمان فيها، وعلاقة اللعبة بالألعاب الأخرى كالنرد.
الكتاب في الأصل هو مخطوطة بعنوان "نزهة أرباب العقول في الشطرنج المنقول" لمؤلفها: أبو زكريا يحيى بن ابراهيم الحكيم، تحتوي المخطوطة على فصول متنوعة ويغلب عليها عدد من الجداول الشطرنجية التي تزيد على نصف صفحاتها. وتتكون الفصول من: مطلب في الطب، فصل منقول من حياة الحيوان الكبرى للإمام كمال الدين الدميري، ذكره في باب العين عند ذكر العقرب، مطلب في لطيف النقل، مطلب في قيمة الدواب، فصل من كتاب العدلي، باب ذكر فيه ما وصلني من الشعر الذي يذكر فيه الشطرنج.
أما عن عمل الدكتور العدواني ومنهجه في تحقيق المخطوطة فكان في: ضبط نص الكتاب نثره وشعره، توثيق ما انتخب المؤلف في كتابه، تفسير بعض المفردات اللغوية، تخريج الأبيات الشعرية التي وردت في النص، الترجمة للشعراء والأعلام الذين وردت اسماؤهم، توثيق الأخبار والروايات، إستدراك ما سقط من سهو ناسخ الكتاب، وأخيراً توثيق الشكال والخطط الشطرنجية.
