ما هي الدوافع التي تقود الإنسان إلى الرغبة بشيء ما؟ ولماذا لا يستطيع إيقاف ميله إلى الرغبة؟... وهل النقص والحرمان دافعان مباشران نحو الرغبة، أم أن ثمة دوافع أخرى إليها؟...
هذه بعض الأسئلة التي جعلت موضوع الرغبة جديراً بالبحث والتفكير في هذا الكتاب، إذ يسير مؤلفه على المنهج الذي اتبعه في إختيار وترجمة نصوص فلسفية مرتبطة بها، بقصد رفع مختلف الإلتباسات التي تحوم حولها، وكذا الإشكالات.
يتألف الكتاب من ستة فصول: الفصل الأول يسعى إلى تقديم نصوص يحاول من خلالها أصحابها تعريف الرغبة، بغية إبراز مختلف دلالاتها؛ ومن ثم تلاقي الخلط الذي يقع بينها وبين مفاهيم قريبة منها، وفي الفصل الثاني يغطي الكتاب مقولات الفلاسفة في التفكير في أصول الرغبة، من منطلق كونها عنصراً جوهرياً يتوقف عليه الوجود الحيواني عامة والإنساني منه على وجه الخصوص؛ ولتجنب ما يمكن أن يقع من خلط بين الرغبة والحاجة خصص الفصل الثالث للتمييز بينهما، بحجة أنه بالرغم من إرتباط الرغبة بالحاجة، فإن الدافع إليها يكون أقوى مما يدفع نحوها، في حين أن الرغبة متولدة من إعتبارات سيكولوجية محضة، أما الفصل الرابع، فقد خصص لإبراز التعالق الحاصل بين الرغبة والثقافة؛ إذ أن الرغبة في الشيء لا تعني بالضرورة جوازه ومعقوليته، وإن كان الراغب لا يفكر في هذين الأمرين مطلقاً ما دام أن كل ثقافة تحدد ما ينبغي أن يرغب فيه...
لهذه الإعتبارات بالذات أفرد المؤلف الفصل الخامس للتفكير في قيمة الرغبة، لأجل لفت الإنتباه إلى الموانع والقيود التي تحدّ من الإقبال على بعض الرغبات، أما الفصل السداس والأخير يستعرض المؤلف نصوصاً فلسفية تكشف في أطروحاتها على التحولات المختلفة المتولدة عن الرغبة، من خلال إسهامها في إحدى خلخلة كبيرة لمنظومة التمثلات والأفكار... إضافة إلى إرتباطها بالتغيرات العميقة التي يحملها معها العلم والثقافة إلى الإنسان.
