رغم التقدم العلمي الهائل وما حققه الإنسان من إنجازات فإنه أصبح عرضة للكثير من الأمراض التي ارتبطت بهذا التقدم وكانت نتيجة له. وفي مقابل ذلك ازداد التركيز على صحة الإنسان وسلامته حيث أخذ المختصون يركّزون على عوامل الوقاية من الأمراض بهدف تجنب وقوع ما لا تحمد عقباه، إذ إن درهم وقاية خير من قنطار علاج.
إن أفضل تعريف للصحة كما يوردها مؤلفو هذا الكتاب هو القول القائل بأن الصحة عبارة عن حالة التوازن النسبي لوظائف الجسم. وهذا التوازن لا ينتج إلا عن تكيف الجسم مع العوامل الضارة التي يتعرّض لها.
لقد حرص مؤلفو الكتاب على تقديم الإرشادات والنصائح الكفيلة بالمحافظة على الصحة والسلامة العامة وهم يقدمون خلاصة خبراتهم وتجاربهم في هذا المجال.
يقع الكتاب في وحدات مخصصة للصحة والرعاية الصحية، وأسس الرعاية الطبية الجيدة ورعاية ذوي الاحتياجات الخاصة وهي تدور في معظمها حول الصحة الشخصية وأهميتها إذ إن عملية الوقاية من الأمراض تبدأ في منع تواجد وتكاثر الجراثيم على السطح الخارجي لجسم الإنسان ومنعها من الدخول إلى داخل الجسم. تعرض هذه الوحدة لمجموعة من الإجراءات التي يقوم بها الشخص للحفاظ على أعضائه من الأمراض ورفع درجة مقاومتها للجراثيم التي قد يتعرض لها.
ويؤكد مؤلفو الكتاب على ضرورة تفادي الكثير من العوامل المادية والنفسية التي تؤثر في صحته وذلك بعرض نفسه بين فترة وأخرى على الطبيب ليفحصه فحصاً عاماً. كما يتحدث الكتاب عن العناية بالمريض، إذ إن من الحالات المرضية البسيطة ما يحتاج لعناية خاصة في المنزل وذلك بعد الكشف الطبي على المريض وإعطائه العلاج اللازم، ويحذر المؤلفون من مضار الأدوية والإدمان إذ إن التسمم قد ينتج عن تناول مواد دوائية أو غير دوائية ولم يغفلوا الحديث عن أسس السلامة العامة في تصميم المنزل وبنائه.
