حظيت الدولة العثمانية بإهتمام بالغ من قبل الدول الأوروبية الغربية في عدة نواح منها: السياسية والإقتصادية والعسكرية والإستراتيجية، وذلك بسبب ما تمثله هذه الدولة من تصور أوروبي بأنه في حالة ضغفها، فإنهم سيفوتون عليها فرصة إزدهارها.
كذلك الأمر من الناحية الإقتصادية حيث كان الأمر يوجب عليهم عدم التهاون في المسائل الهامة التي يمكن جنيها من وجود شعب كبير وأرض واسعة، كثيرة الخيرات، متنوعة التضاريس والموارد ومن الناحية العسكرية والإستراتيجية، فقد كانت الدول الأوروبية تنظر إليها على أنها تمثل موقعاً جغرافياً يمتاز بملازمته لحدودها، وفيما بعد أصبحت الدولة العثمانية تمثل العقبة التي تقف أمام أطماع أوروبا.
ولقد كان عهد السلطان عبد الحميد نموذجاً واضحاً لتلك العلاقة بين الدول الأوروبية والدولة العثمانية، حيث يعتبر عهد هذا السلطان من أهم العهود التي عاشتها الدولة العثمانية وأشدها خطورة، ذلك أن عهده شهد تغيرات داخلية وخارجية، كان أثرها واضحاً عليه وعلى دولة العثمانية، خصوصاً بعد توليه الحكم من 1876- 1909م وهي الفترة التي كان فيها السعي الحثيث لخلع السلطان عبد الحميد عن العرش.
وتكمن أهمية هذه الدراسة في أنها محاولة جادة لدراسة فترة حكم السلطان عبد الحميد، ومعرفة الظروف السياسية المحيطة به داخلياً وخارجياً، وخصوصاً منذ ظهور جمعية الإتحاد والترقي، ونشاطها الداخلي والخارجي، وعلاقتها بالقوى الأوروبية واليهودية العالية بجميع مؤسساتها والأشكال التي عبروا فيها عن أنفسهم من ماسونية ودونمة وصهيونية.
