إن التعليل رافق النحو في نشأته، ولكنه كغيره من العلوم بدأ عفوياً فطرياً مختلطاً بغيره من العلوم إلى أن ثبت جذوره في الأرض واستقل عن غيره ليصبح علماً قائماً بذاته، فحاجة العرب إلى تعليم أبنائهم لغة آبائهم - أصولها وقواعدها - جعلتهم ينقبون عن السبب الذي يقف وراء كل حكم أعطي لكل كلمة تمر بهم، فالإنطلاقة الاولى للعلل كانت بسيطة أولية تناسب بساطة الأسئلة التي كانت ترد على أذهان متعلمي اللغة، وبساطة الغاية التي من أجلها كان التعليل إلى أن جاء عهد ظهرت فيه المدارس النحوية.
إن الوراق سعياً منه للوقوف على حكمة اللغة والقوانين التي تحكمها أولى العلل إهتماماً خاصاً توسع فيها، واسترسل فكان حلقة مهمة في تاريخ النحو، وعلى مدار ما تقدم، فالإشكالية التي تشغل ذهننا في هذا الكتاب هي ماهية التعليل وما هي آليات إجراء العلل وخصائصها في كتاب الوراق.
كتاب الوراق يعد من أقدم كتب النحو حيث استوفى فيه الوراق آراء النحاة السابقين لعصره، وخاصة سيبويه والخليل، فكان بحق من الذين امتلكوا ناصية الكشف عن حكمة هذه اللغة، والتي تبرز من خلال البناء المتناسق لكتابه علل النحو المبني على أن العلة دليل على الحكم الثابت بالنص، وهي السبيل الكفيل بالكشف عن البناء المتكامل للغة، والغوص في سراديب هذا البناء.
في كتاب (علل النحو) تظهر آليات إجراء العلة، ومنهج النحاة في تناولها من الوجهة التطبيقية الصرفة.
وقد قُسم الكتاب إلى تمهيد وثلاثة فصول، أما الفصل الأول عنوناه بـ: العلة النحوية - مفهومها، تطورها، وشروطها، قوادحها، فقسمناه إلى أربعة مباحث في المبحث الأول تناولنا مفهوم العلة، ثم تناولنا في المبحث الثاني تطور مفهوم اللغة، أما الفصل الثاني تناولنا فيه العلة النحوية مفهومها وأقسامها في كتاب الوراث حيث قسمناه إلى مبحثين المبحث الاول تناولنا فيه مفهوم العلة النحوية في في كتاب الوراق، وأما المبحث الثاني فتناولنا فيه أقسام العلة النحوية.
أما الفصل الثالث تناولنا فيه آليات إجراء العلة وخصائصها في كتاب الوراق، فقسمناه إلى مبحثين؛ المبحث الأول تناولنا فيه آليات إجراء العلة في كتاب الوراق، أما المبحث الثاني تناولنا فيه خصائص آليات إجراء العلة في كتاب الوراق.
