سنوات الحرب اللبنانية التي ألقت بظلالها على حياة اللبنانيين خاصة والعرب عموماً تم تدوينها وتسجيلها من قبل بعض ذوي المآرب الخاصة الذين عمدوا إلى إلقاء اللوم على جانب دون آخر، أو حاولا تعميق الهوة بين أطراف النزاع إذ أرجعوا كل أحداث الحرب إلى عامل واحد في محاولة لتأجيج نار الفرقة والصراع. والأستاذ فؤاد مطر، بحسه الصحفي وخبرته الطويلة ومعاصرته لأحداث الحرب، وما دار فيها من تطورات، يسجل بدقة بالغة وبحيادية مطلقة يوميات تلك الحرب، ويعرض لمراحل تطور الصراعات والتحالفات.
وفي الجزء الأول يتحدث المؤلف عن شرارة الحرب، حيث يرى أن هنالك ما يشبه القرار الخفي بان تصل الأمور إلى طريق مسدود وأن تتطور الأحداث من سيئ إلى أسوأ، لتدوم حالة الحرب، ويستمر اشتعال الحرائق. أما الجزء الثاني فهو مخصص لهستيريا العقل في "يوم السبت الأسود"، ومبادئ الإصلاح السياسي التي طرحها المبعوث السوري آنذاك والانهيار الكبير الذي ترافق مع محاصرة قصر كميل شمعون واستقالة كرامي، وإعلان الوثيقة الدستورية.
وفي حين يعرض الجزء الثالث (الانقسام) مساعي فالدهايم، ومفاوضات جنبلاط في دمشق ونداء بيار الجميل إلى اللبنانيين، يستعرض الجزء الرابع اتفاق القاهرة-اتفاقية ملكيات، وكلام حافظ الأسد حول لبنان، ومحضر مقابلة براون للمفتي، أما الجزء الخامس فهو يعرض لنهاية المطاف والمبادرة العربية وكيف جرى انتخاب الهراوي ولماذا تم اغتيال معوض، والموقف الأمريكي المحير وانتخاب نبيه بري للرئاسة الثانية، ورفيق الحرير للرئاسة الثالثة. والأجزاء الخمسة مرفقة بالوثائق المتعلقة بالمرحلة التي يتناولها والصور التي تسجل كل تلك المراحل.
