لقد تم وضع هذا الكتاب بناء على تكليف من مؤسسة المعاهد الفنية، ليكون كتاباً منهجياً لطلبة المؤسسة في أقسام الميكانيك -فرع تصنيع المعادن- المرحلة الأولى. واشتملت محتويات على مفردات منهج مادة "عمليات تصنيع المعادن" المقررة، مع بعض الإضافات الضرورية.
يتضمن الكتاب خمسة فصول: الفصل الأول: القياس: حول مبادئ القياس، وأدوات وأجهزة القياس المستخدمة، وكذلك طرق القياس المتبعة عند استخدامها. الفصل الثاني: النجارة: يتضمن معلومات في النجارة العامة، وما يحتاجه الطالب بمجال نجارة النماذج لتكون مقدمة لموضوع السباكة.
في الفصل الثالث: يتناول هذا الفصل سباكة الرمال والطرق الأخرى وكل ما يتبع ذلك من عمليات صهر المعدن وصب القوالب وإعدادها وغيرها. الفصل الرابع: اللحام: والذي يشمل طرق اللحام المختلفة ومميزاتها وعيوب اللحام المتوقعة واختباراتها. أما الفصل الخامس: فهو يشتمل على موضوع التجاوزات والحدود والتوافقات إضافة إلى موضوع تشطيب السطوح وكيفية تحديد دقتها وقياسها، وكذلك ما يتعلق بمحددات القياس وأنواعها المستخدمة.
إن ما تضمنته موضوعات الكتاب يمكن أن يكون الأساس لدراسة الطالب بمجال عمليات تصنيع المعادن الذي يستكمل في الصف الثاني.
