وُلِدَ تيموثي كَلِر ونشأ في ولاية پنسلڤانيا الأميركيَّة، وحصَّل علومَه في جامعة بَكنِل وكلِّيَّة غوردون-كونويل اللَّاهوتيَّة، ومعهد وستمنستر اللَّاهوتيّ.
غير أنَّه تعلَّمَ أكثر الكلِّ من السنين التِّسع التي قضاها راعيًا لكنيسة وست هوپول المشيَخيَّة في مدينة هوپول العمَّاليَّة بولاية ڤرجينيا، حيثُ أحبَّه جمهور المؤمنين، وواكَبوه صابرين في أوَّل عهده بخدمة الرِّعاية، وعلَّموه- وهو الشَّماليُّ المثقَّفُ المفكِّر- أن يُفصِحَ ويوضِح.
أمَّا الكنيسة الثانية الذي خدم فيها فكانت كنيسة الفادي المشيَخيَّة في مَنهاتن، وهو قد أسَّسها مع زوجته كاثي وأبنائه الثَّلاثة الصِّغار في 1989.
ويحضُر تلك الكنيسةَ اليومَ جمهورٌ منتظِمٌ يبلغُ نحو ستَّة آلاف شخص، في خمسِ خدمات كلَّ أسبوع.
وُضعَتْ في قائمة أكثر 25 كنيسةً تأثيرًا في أميركا، ولها عددٌ من الكنائس المتفرِّعة منها، وتتولَّى زَرعَ الكنائس في المدن الكبرى بأنحاء شتَّى من العالَم.
ألَّفَ عددًا من الكتبِ من أبرزها: ‘‘الإيمان في عصر التَّشكيك’’ (The Reason for God).

لن أستخدِمَ عنوانَ المَثَل الأكثرَ شيوعًا: مَثَل الابن الضالّ. هذا ما ذكَرَه تيموثي كَلِر في مقدِّمة كتابه هذا، ويتابع قائلًا: ‘‘فليس صحيحًا أن نُفرِدَ فقط واحِدًا من الابنَين على أنَّه بيتُ القصيدِ الوحيدُ في القصَّة... فالحكايةُ تَدورُ على الأخ الأكبر كما على الأخ الأصغر، وعلى الأبِ كما على الابنَين، على حدٍّ سواء. وما يقوله الربُّ يسوع بشأن الأخ الأكبر هو واحدةٌ من أهمِّ الرسائل التي تُقدَّم لنا في الكتاب المقدَّس. قد يتبادرُ إلى الذِّهن أنَّ نَشْرَ كتابٍ كاملٍ عن مَثَلٍ واحدٍ في الإنجيل هو مبالغةٌ لن تخلوَ من لَغو الكلام. غير أنَّ تيموثي كَلِر يقدِّم في هذا الكتاب بحثًا متميِّزًا يقدِّمُ الأبعاد الثقافيَّة والإنسانيَّة لمعاصِري السيِّد المسيح، ويربطُها ببراعة فذَّة بِعَصرنا الحاضر، بل أيضًا بكلِّ العصور؛ فالبشرُ هُم هم أينما حلُّوا في الزمان والمكان يقفون ضمن فريقَين يحاولُ أحدُهما الوصولَ إلى الله من باب التديُّن، فيما يرفضُ الفريقُ الآخر الله مبتعدًا عنه بل منكرًا وجودَه. يُبيِّنُ تيموثي كَلِر أنَّ في جوهَرَ الإيمان المسيحيِّ طريقًا جديدًا للوصول إلى الله.
