"الخشوع هو استشعار القلب رهبة الموقف في الصلاة بين يدي الله عز وجل فيسكن ويخشع فيسري الخشوع منه إلى الجوارح والملامح والحركات. فيقف المصلي بين يدي الله عز وجل راجياً رحمته وثوابه خائفاً من غضبه وعقابه، طامعاً في جنته ونعيمها، زاهداً في الدنيا وغرورها، وعندئذ تتضائل كل الشواغل الدنيوية عن ذهنه، ولا يبقى في القلب إلا انشغال بمناجاة الله عز وجل.
وينبغي للمصلي أن يحضر قلبه عند كل شيء من الصلاة فإذا سمع المؤذن فليمثل النداء للقيامة وليشمر للإجابة، ولينظر ماذا يجيب، وبأي بدن يحضر. وإذا ستر عورته فليعلم أن المراد من ذلك تغطية فضائح بدنه عن الخلق. فليذكر عورات باطنه وفضائح سره التي لا يطلع عليها إلا الخالق، وليس لها عند ساتر، وإنها يكفرها الندم والحياء والخوف.
