إنَّ (التركيب اللغوي لشعر المتنبي) موضوعٌ تجدرُ دراستهُ، لا سيما إذا كان يدرس قسماً مهماً من الكلام العربي "حروف المعاني" الذي يُعَدُّ مفتاح التعبير الدقيق الذي لا يمكن أن تكون الدراسة النحوية حقيقية متقنة إلاَّ به، في ديوان شاعر طالما (ملأ الدنيا وشغل الناس) بشعره قديماً وحديثاً، فكانت دراسة شعر المتنبي بدراسة تطبيقية تتيح للقارئ الموازنة بين إستعمال حروف المعاني لدى المتنبي، وما قاله النحويون والبلاغيون فيها، فضلاً عن تحديد أهم الملامح الأسلوبية التي يتسم بها شعره.
ولضخامة الموضوع وسعة أبوابه اقتصر البحث على (الحروف العاملة) حيث خاض المؤلف في أقوال النحويين واللغويين والبلاغيين والمفسرين، ومناقشة آرائهم في حروف المعاني في أثناء دراستها في شعر المتنبي، وإجراء موازنة بين ما قال أولئك فيها وما وضعوه من قواعد وضوابط لهاء، وبين إستعمالها في لغة الشعر ولا سيما لغة شعر المتنبي وبذلك نتعرف على مدى تطابق شعره مع تلك القواعد والضوابط النحوية، وما أخذه من اللهجات العربية الأخرى.
وكذلك بين الكتاب ضمناً موافقته آراء الكوفيين وخروجه عن قواعد البصريين ويكاد يكون هذا ميزة من مميزات أسلوبه، وفي الوقت نفسه تُعَدُّ هذه الدراسة مدخلاً لدراسة لغة الشعراء المُحْدَثِين (المولدين) - الذين منع النحويون الإستشهاد بشعرهم - من وجهةٍ لغوية ونحوية وأسلوبية بحتة.
