ويعتبر هذا العمل الأدبي الإبداعي أيضاً أول نص روائي فانطاستيكي في الأدب العالمي، تبدو الرواية في رحلتها الفانطاستيكية - على الرغم من تعدد أجزائها - نصاً واقعياً ساخراً ينتقد العقل الظلامي ويسفه سلوكيات السحرة وأباطرة القضاء الروماني الذين اتهموا "لوكيوس" بالسحر والشعوذة.
ومن هنا، فالرواية إعلان لإنهيار الإمبراطورية الرومانية وإفلاسها أخلاقياً.
وتتضمن رواية أبوليوس فكرة المسخ لدى الإنسان القديم المرتبطة بفكرة عقاب الآلهة، فهي تنزله على من هم أكثر بعداً عن الروح الإلهية، وأكثر قرباً من الحياة الحيوانية البئيسة.
